MANILA, Philippines – Contractors of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) who would be taking advantage of the Holy Week break to do road repairs, were ordered Tuesday by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to start the repairs on Maundy Thursday.

MMDA chairman Emerson Carlos said that unless the contractors could assure they could start with the road works on 2 a.m. of Maundy Thursday and finish by 2 p.m. of Easter Sunday, they would not be given the permits to proceed.

“’Yung ating road works na gagawin ng ating DPWH, sisiguraduhin natin na one lane lang per every segment. ‘Di sila pwedeng maghukay ng dalawang lanes dahil dalawang lanes agad ang mawawala sa mga motorista. At may instructions po tayo na kapag ‘di nila nabungkal ng 2 a.m. ng Thursday, ‘di nila itutuloy yun,” Carlos said.

Carlos said the strict compliance with the scheduled road works as agreed upon with the MMDA and the DPWH is to avoid delays in the road repairs and ensure smooth flow of traffic in the affected thoroughfares.

“Baka abutan sila (DPWH contractors) ng Linggo,” Carlos said, noting that the huge volume of motorists who left for the provinces to spend their Holy Week are expected to return to Metro Manila by Sunday afternoon.

The permits issued by the MMDA to the contractors are valid only until 2 p.m. of Sunday, Carlos said.

Meanwhile, Carlos said all of the agency’s traffic constables would be deployed today at the various transport terminals, choke points and exit points of Metro Manila such as Balintawak, Mindanao Avenue, Magallanes, and the Coastal Road to assist with the expected heavy Holy Week traffic.

Carlos said the MMDA will set-up an advance command post at Balintawak and will be deploying over 2,000 traffic personnel to man and direct traffic in the strategic areas in the metropolis.

The MMDA earlier announced that on Wednesday and Monday, provincial buses would be exempted from the “number coding scheme” to provide ample transportation to passengers going to and returning from the countryside.

According to the MMDA, the number coding scheme is automatically suspended for all types of vehicles on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday being holidays.
