Daang Matuwid ally likens Mar to FPJ – #JHedzWorlD

JORDAN, Guimaras, Philippines – The Koalisyon ng Daang Matuwid yesterday likened its presidential candidate Manuel Roxas II to Fernando Poe Jr. (FPJ), ironically in response to a statement by the camp of the late action star’s adopted daughter, Sen. Grace Poe.

Poe’s campaign manager, Cebu Rep. Joseph Durano, earlier claimed that the 2016 election is now a two way-race between his principal and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte. He noted that the two presidential candidates have been topping recent pre-election surveys.

Durano’s comment did not sit well with Roxas’ allies, who remain confident that he would pull a surprise and dominate the upcoming polls.

“It seems like Senator Poe did not watch FPJ’s movies,” coalition spokesman and Akbayan Rep. Ibarra Gutierrez said.

“Those who watch his movies know that the most powerful punch is always thrown at the end. Only villains laugh at the beginning. The decent hero always prevails in the end,” he added.

The movies of FPJ feature protagonists who are beaten badly by their enemies but emerge victorious in the end. The formula was a huge hit among moviegoers and helped catapult the late actor to fame.

While he has yet to top any pre-election survey, Roxas remains optimistic that he will defeat his rivals because of his track record and accomplishments. “Congressman Durano is a spokesman for GP (Grace Poe). Perhaps he suffered from heat stroke so he views our countrymen that way. He has not analyzed surveys and politics properly,” Roxas told reporters in a campaign sortie here.

When asked what he thinks would boost his survey numbers, Roxas said: “People will not gamble their future.”

“They will go for someone with track record, someone who did not place them at risk, someone who did not take advantage of them,” he said.

No loyalty check

Meanwhile, stalwarts of the Liberal Party (LP) yesterday dismissed reports of a loyalty check in their ranks purportedly to stem defections ahead of the May 9 elections.

Quezon City Rep. Alfred Vargas described as “ridiculous” reports that the party leadership was checking on the allegiance of its members, particularly in Metro Manila.

“I think the LP, in the National Capital Region in particular, remains united and solid. There’s no such thing nor a need for loyalty check,” Vargas said.

He said the bulk of Quezon City’s estimated 1.2 million voters will go for Roxas and his runningmate Leni Robredo.

Vargas said the administration winning in the most populous city in  Metro Manila was not an empty boast as 43 out of 44 local officials are all for Roxas and Robredo.

Earlier, Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. and Mayor Herbert Bautista led Quezon City officials in committing their support for Roxas and Robredo.

“We are one in their goal to bring back the Philippines to decent Filipinos, and believe that under the leadership of Mar and Leni, the City of Stars will shine brighter,” Belmonte and Bautista said in a joint statement.    – With Paolo Romero
